The Oakland Raiders have to take a quarterback with the first overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, because no NFL starting quarterback in his right mind would go to Oakland right now. The franchise is in a mess, the offensive line is just that, offensive, and no-one on the planet knows whether Randy Moss wants to play football or not. The best remaining free agent quarterback, David Carr, who recently signed with the Carolina Panthers didn’t even have the Raiders on his “to visit” list. The last I checked David Carr wasn’t exactly the greatest thing since sliced bread. How sad is that!!!
When Daunte Culpepper is finally released by the Miami Dolphins, I guess he could be an option for the Raiders, but owner Al Davis isn’t likely to take on that type of salary attached to a bum knee. It would be fun to see if Randy Moss would actually show up and try if he knew Culpepper was just going to throw it up for him, like back in the day.
Back to the original point, the Raiders are not in an enviable position with this pick, because JaMarcus Russell has a poor work ethic that $70+ million isn’t going to help and Brady Quinn reminds me of another good looking, overrated, and over-hyped Notre Dame quarterback in Rick Mirer. How did that work out??? Still, the Raiders really have no choice, but to take Russell and my guess is we’ll be talking about this for a while.

1Based on potential, I guess you have to draft Russell but I’m not completely sold on Quinn or Russell. Russell could be a superstar or a complete bust and maybe I’m wrong but Quinn just doesn’t seem like a QB you should build a franchise around.
I wish them luck but I’m glad I don’t have to make that call.
