The New England Patriots had a great draft weekend and it had little to do with the draft. The Pats are easily one of the elite teams in the AFC, but never seem to be satisfied with their roster. Head coach Bill Belichick is always working to bring players in that he feels will either fit into their system or need a change of scenery, but the Randy Moss trade has to have even the most rabid Patriot fan asking “What to #@*!?”
I guess the feeling would have to be that this team has enough player leadership to keep Moss in line, and after all he is a front runner. As long as the Patriots win, he will be a happy camper and they should win a lot. In his post trade interviews, Moss sounds like a man ready to play for a team where he is not the only talent on the field.
I have to admit, I was one of the people who thought his skills and his speed had diminished in recent years, but when I heard the report that he ran a 4.29 & 4.32 forty this past weekend my jaw dropped. That’s quite a bit faster than Calvin Johnson and we’ve been talking about him as if he is going to be a hall-of-famer. With Moss’ speed and ability to catch anything thrown in his general direction, coupled with the average play of the Patriots receivers in 2006, Tom Brady has to be down right giddy about this weekend’s developments.
Even though I think that all the goofy issues that Randy Moss brings to an NFL locker room are stupid, petty, and distracting, I do believe this will wind up being one of the best off-season acquisitions in recent memory.
