Posted by markj as Are You Kidding Me?, Player News and Opinion
Monday was truly one of the remarkable days for stupidity around the NFL. Even amidst team’s mini-camps and free agent signings, the discussion has centered, largely, around off field actions of various players and none have been more talked about than the issues surrounding Atlanta Falcons star quarterback Michael Vick.
In case you’ve been living in a cave for the last month or so, Vick is under investigation for an alleged dog-fighting ring found on his property in Virginia that was being run by his cousin. Along with the dogs and dog-fighting paraphernalia, police found guns, illegal ammunition cartridges, and marijuana. It has been speculated that Vick might be the one bankrolling the operation, however, he maintains that he had no knowledge of anything illegal taking place on the property.
Anyhoo…as expected, everyone and their brother has been asked their opinion about the subject and all comments have been, again, what we might expect. Something along the lines of:
“I think dog-fighting is horrible and disgusting and has no place in American society.”
When I hear these responses, I think, yeah that’s about how I feel…and along comes Clinton Portis of the Washington Redskins to weigh in on the subject. Portis proceeds to hit us with this beauty:
“I don’t know if he [Michael Vick]was fighting dogs or not, but it’s his property, it’s his dog. If that’s what he wants to do, do it. I think people should mind their business.” Portis went on to say “I’m from Laurel, Mississippi and I know a lot of back roads that have dog fighting if you want to go see it.”
WOW!! …O.K., where do I start? Well, I guess I’ll start with …Are You Kidding Me?? Believe me, I wanted to say something much stronger there. It sounds like Mr. Portis is suggesting that what happens at your house, stays at your house. Hmmm…How did that work out for Jayson Williams of the NBA when a person he knew was killed at his house? Well??…HE WAS CHARGED WITH MURDER!!! Nice logic there Clinton.
Of course, when the Redskins got wind of these statements, there was, and I know this is shocking, a clarification on what Portis said posted on their website and it reads as follows:
“In the recent interview I gave concerning dog fighting, I want to make it clear I do not take part in dog fighting or condone dog fighting in any manner.”
Does that sound like a lawyer trying to sound like a Clinton Portis or what?? I mean, C’mon, …concerning, condone, and manner in the same sentence?
Honestly, has there ever been a more clueless group of people in American society than some of the highly paid scumbags in professional athletics, but then again, if Vick, Portis, and basically the entire Bengal’s roster weren’t around, what would we have to talk about?
